Training Consultant

at Rustic Pathways

Rustic Pathways is a student travel organization which offers experiential education, community service, foreign language, and adventure programs. We empower students through innovative and responsible travel experiences to positively impact lives and communities around the world. Our destinations stretch from the white-sand beaches of Fiji to the rainforest canopies of Costa Rica, the high Himalayan mountains to the Great Barrier Reef, and many places in between. Rustic Pathways demands professionalism and integrity across all of our operations, insists on quality in all aspects of our programs, and places strong emphasis on the safety and well-being of our students and staff. In 2017, roughly 11,000 students will travel with us most of which are high school students.

Project Overview:

All Rustic Pathways Program Leaders must complete the Rustic Pathways Program Leader Training Course prior to working with our students. This includes both online modules as well as in-person training. This year, we are looking to create additional content in a few priority areas. We plan to hire someone with experience creating and delivering training in these areas:

  • Diversity, Equity and Inclusion
  • Anti-Bullying
  • Intercultural Competency

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

  • Review Rustic Pathways’ current training and policies in this area.
  • Design a short introduction to diversity, equity, and inclusion principles to be included in online training.
  • Design activities and discussions to be used during in-person training. The activities and discussions should build on the online training. They should help program leaders conduct a self-assessment to better understand their personal areas of improvement (recognizing biases) and fully prepare program leaders to work with our students. This includes giving program leaders the tools they need to create an inclusive environment at the beginning of their programs, work with diverse student populations, and respond to issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion as they arise.

Anti-bullying Training

  • Review Rustic Pathways’ current training and policies in this area.
  • Design a short introduction to anti-bullying principles to be included in online training.
  • Design activities and discussions to be used during in-person training. The activities and discussions should build on the online training. The purpose is to better equip our program leaders with the knowledge and skills to prevent bullying from occurring on their programs to the best of their abilities, identify instances of bullying, and to respond appropriately when bullying occurs.

Intercultural Competency Training

  • Review Rustic Pathways’ current training and policies in this area.
  • Design a short introduction to intercultural competency to be included in online training.
  • Design activities and discussions to be used during in-person training. The activities and discussions should build on the online training. The purpose is to prepare our program leaders to build students’ intercultural competence on programs, to communicate and work across cultures effectively, and to resolve issues stemming from cultural misunderstandings appropriately. This likely includes choosing a framework or a tool through which to teach these skills.
